Breeze Playlist Resolution

Breeze Playlist Resolution

Screen resolution is the number of pixels a screen can display in each direction.  Providing the correct screen resolution for a Breeze playlist is a critical factor in achieving great-looking digital signage.

Screen Resolution

Screens possess two sets of width and height measurements: physical and digital.  While most people are familiar with physical sizes, like 60 inches, screens also posses a digital size measurement known as display resolution.

The display resolution of a screen is the number of pixels the screen can display in each direction.  A pixel is the smallest unit of measure of digital graphics.  Numerous pixels combine together to create the "picture" displayed on a screen.

Playlist Resolution is the width and height of a Breeze playlist in pixels.  The default resolution selected for new Breeze playlists 1920 x 1080.  This resolution supports the popular 1080p, also known as Full HD, a very common digital size for widescreen television and LCD screens.

Screen Orientation

Screens are often rotated 90 degrees to create a Portrait screen orientation.  Or less often, a screen is purchased as a vertical display where Portrait screen orientation is the default.  When a screen is wider than it is tall, the screen orientation is referred to as Landscape.  When a screen is taller than it is wide, the screen orientation is referred to as Portrait.

Portrait screen orientation is highly desirable for some installations.

Custom Playlist Resolution

The resolution for a new Breeze playlist is determined by the Screen Units fields in the New Playlist window.  The Screen Units setting is used to size the design area in the Editor -- called the Canvas -- to exactly match the dimensions of the screen.  This ensures the content looks the same on the screen attached to the Breeze Player as it does while being designed in the Editor.

A custom resolution is entered by modifying the measurements in the Screen Units fields.  The first Screen Units field is the width, or the horizontal measure of the screen.  The second Screen Units field is the height, or the vertical measure of the screen.

Selecting a Custom Playlist Resolution:
  1. Select New Playlist from the Playlist Menu or the quick access toolbar at the right of the Canvas header.
  2. Enter the width of the screen resolution in the first Screen Units field.
  3. Enter the height of the screen in the second Screen Units field.

  4. Select a Layout (optional).
  5. Click OK to create a new playlist with the custom resolution.

Portrait Screen Orientation

If a screen is 1920 x 1080 but it is rotated 90 degrees to create a Portrait screen orientation, selecting the Portrait radio button switches the width and height measurements with one click.

To assist users with playlists built in Portrait screen orientation, a feature in the Editor alters the graphical user interface layout.  The Switch to Portrait Layout button is located at the left of the Canvas header.

In Portrait Layout, mode the Timeline and Zones List panel is shifted to the right of the Canvas, increasing the vertical area in which portrait-style content can be viewed and designed.

Modify Resolution of Existing Playlist

A playlist resolution can also be modified after a playlist is created.  Selecting the Edit Dimensions button in the Playlist Properties panel opens the Edit Dimensions window, where the Screen Units fields can be modified.

Click OK to close the Edit Dimensions window and resize the Canvas and any existing zones.

Modifying the Playlist Resolution after a playlist is completely designed can sometimes cause media items to shift in an undesirable manner.  Any issues created by modifying the Playlist Resolution can usually be corrected by resizing and repositioning zones or by adjusting media items within the zone.

The Edit Dimensions feature can be especially helpful for users who want to deploy the same content to screens with multiple resolutions in different aspect ratios.

Default Playlist Resolution

The default Playlist Resolution selected for new Breeze playlists, 1920 x 1080, can be set in the Configuration tool.

After the new default measurements provided in the Default Playlist Width and Default Playlist Height fields have been saved, the new measurements populate the Screen Units fields in the New Playlist window automatically and will be used anytime a new playlist is created going forward.

Depending on the player model, instructions to alter the screen orientation hardware setting will vary and is located in the corresponding Media Player Installation Guide.
