Convert Video to Recommended Format
When a video file won't playback on a player or the quality of playback on the player is very poor, an encoding issue could be to blame.
Encoders are used to store a video in a series of 1s and 0s so it can be saved as a file and transferred between computers. When a video file is opened for playback, it must be decoded. It is best to decode a video file using the same codec as when it was encoded. When the same codec is not available as when the file was encoded, issues can occur.
Re-encoding videos in Handbrake before uploading them to the Breeze server alleviates any issues caused by missing codecs and several other issues that can occur with video files. The Handbrake application is a well-known, open-source transcoder that can be downloaded from the Internet for free. - Open Handbrake the application.
- Click on the Open Source button in the toolbar or select File: Open a single video file in the Source Selection window. Navigate to the desired video file and click Open.
- Select a location and name for the converted version of the video in the Save As field at the bottom of the window. Select Browse to navigate to a new location.
- The resolution of the video is adjusted in the Dimensions tab. Handbrake is “smart” software, and will automatically detect the video resolution size, even cropping black areas at the edges of a video frame.
The recommended resolution for Breeze players is 1080p or a Width of 1920 and a Height of 1080.
- The Presets panel offers a variety of compatible production settings, accessible by selecting Presets in the toolbar. The Fast 720p30 preset is most compatible with Breeze players. See below for additional adjustments benefitting Android players.
- Click Start Encode to convert, or create a new version of, the video. A status area at the bottom of the window reports progress while the video is being converted.
Android Breeze players benefit from additional encoding of Baseline Profile Level 3.0. This profile requires less processing to decode the video and helps keep the Android player running at top efficiency.
The HandBrake video transcoder offers a multitude of methods to customize the video production settings. This document is meant to outline a process as simply as possible.
